We woke up for our final morning in Wendover Woods and had already planned to extend our short trip by one more day (decided the day before at the cafe over a drink in the sunshine!).
We knew we didn’t want to go too far as we needed to be back for 9 holes of golf on the afternoon of the next day. And we also wanted to find somewhere with chemical waste disposal, as there are no facilities like that at Wendover Woods.
So we had hopped onto Search for Sites and found Ashwell Farm, in Little Kingshill, near Great Missenden, which was described as a “rustic but very peaceful” location. We had rung the day before to confirm the details (£15 per night, water included on pitch, toilets, showers, waste disposal), and so we packed up our motorhome and set off at around 9:30am.
We stopped briefly at Wendover village itself, to stock up on a few food essentials from the Budgens and to grab some cash. Then we made our way towards Great Missenden. It was very busy here already, as it is a beautiful little village and is home to the Roald Dahl museum. But we carried on for a few minutes down the road, and arrived at Little Kingshill. My husband spotted the sign for the campsite (thank goodness!) and we drove down the little track, past a few cottages, to get to the pitch up spot in the lower field.
There were quite a few other campers here, including a lovely Belgian couple with their son, who had come to the UK for a multi week Harry Potter themed trip! Their adventures made me want to do one too.
Once we were set up and had topped up our water in Sassy, my husband and I did an outdoor workout. It was beautiful – nice and cool in the shade, very quiet and not too overlooked (as I sweated on my yoga mat!).
Then we did an hour of science and English with the kids as part of their homeschooling. They also did 10 minutes of TTRS (Times Table Rock Stars) – a platform that adapts to their knowledge and builds up a heat map of how well they know their facts. Before leaving school, they both had dark green heat maps (an excellent sign that they know their TTs!), but as we’ve bought the family subscription for home educating, they have to start from scratch. Now, they are loving turning their heat maps from grey to green again!
Due to all of this hard work, exercise and “jobs”, we decided to reward ourselves with a trip to the pub! We cycled 2-3 minutes out of the campsite and across the village green to the amazing pub The Full Moon. Here, we ate massive portions of chips, enjoyed a couple of cold Staropramens and the kids slurped down soda waters with orange cordial. It was heaven! We learnt about Rene Descartes together (we’ve already completed a long session about the key, awesome artists that we wanted to learn about, and are now moving on to the philosophers).
At the end of this very successful evening, we cycled back to the motorhome, made some dinner and played card games outside. We found out that my daughter is amazing at bluffing and doesn’t have a tell, and my son is really handy at topping up all of our drinks and does have a tell!
It was a peaceful, quiet and relaxing night. We slept well after channel flipping between Casino Royale and Dr Pimple Popper on the TV and woke up early to head back for golf.
And I hit another milestone…. I drove Sassy back! My husband took her down the single track roads (I’ll build up confidence eventually!) but I drove her back on the main roads. It was daunting but I really want to get some mileage in before we go to Europe in September, so I can help with the driving. And I didn’t want my first experience to be on the other side of the road!
Next, we’re onto golfing, spa tripping with family, day tripping, swimming and home educating for a week or so, before we head up North.
