We set off after packing up the Motorhome early on Sunday morning. We were sad to leave the dog with relatives but staying in a Motorhome for the next 6-8 weeks with a dog would’ve been tricky.
We decided to stay just outside of Folkstone in a Caravan and Motorhome Club site. The site was super easy and it was only 15 minutes away from the channel crossing. Although we managed to check in very easily, unfortunately there were pretty severe delays and we were stuck at the gate for over an hour and a half.
The kids absolutely loved the crossing as they’ve never done that before. Once over the other side we were driving on the right hand side of the road, we decided to head to the Blockhaus d’Éperlecques which is a German artillery site which was used to house and create V1 and V2 bombs. The kids were blown away by the sheer size and the concrete structure surrounding the site. This really did elevate the kids experience on day one.
We paid for entry at the Blockhaus site in Watten, and upon entry we asked if we could stay in our Motorhome on the large car park site. The lady at the reception was very sweet and said no trouble at all. We did try and speak in French so this may be endeared us to her.
The Blockhaus had loads of artillery, loads of multilingual talks at various different parts of the site and fun little gift shop for badges and postcards. The museum / site had lots of visual and audio guides filled with WW2 information that the kids sat through. These really helped the kids take in the experience and the sheer size of it made it really enthralling.
