Ambleside in the Lake District in the United Kingdom has so much to offer for us as a family. There are great walks from your doorstep, pubs a short stroll down the hill, and shops that are great for the soul – book shops everywhere. Which is our cup of tea. Not to mention the golf course a short drive away.

Our first day we took a walk from our door and decided to hit a hike up Wansfell Pike and over into Troutbeck. We took a packed lunch with us and enjoyed a fantastic view of Lake Windermere as we were sat on top of the fell. This circular route took us about 6 hours.

On the second day, the weather wasn’t very good so we went to the quaint little cinema in the centre of Ambleside called Zeffirelli’s and both us adults sat outside with a book and had a crafty pint while the kids went in and watched Minions and Monsters in the cinema. We cannot recommend this cinema highly enough. It’s great and never busy. The seats are old-school but super comfortable.
Now to my favourite bit. The following day we took the kids to Keswick golf club and we smashed out 15 holes. As we were only playing once this week we decided to rent out some golf buggies. The golf buggies were only £30 each and the round for the kids was only £10 each. This was super fun and the kids loved it. It was really challenging and hilly so the kids really had to think and struggled on some of the holes.
We have a great pub down the end of our road called the Golden Rule. This pub is super old school, very cozy, allows dogs, and often has a friendly welcoming environment.
Top things to do in Ambleside:
- Hike Loughrigg or Wansfell Pike – great with kids, cafés en route and about 4 to 6 hours
- Ambleside shops, plenty of bookshops, plenty of hiking stores and a play area right in the centre of town
- Zeffirellis cinema – shows all the latest movies and they have a bar right outside the cinema room so you can let your kids go in and watch a movie
- Golf – Keswick golf club is only 30 minutes drive away. Was really quiet and a really well maintained course
- Check out the Thai restaurant – Jintana in town. This has always been great for us and we eat here every time we come
- Check out the sourdough Pizza company as well they are fantastic.
