Both L and I have undergraduate degrees and we both have masters. L has a 1st° in Psychology and Computing, a Masters in Research and Statistics and a PGCE in teaching. I on the other hand have a more vocational degree and Masters. I have an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science to a 2:1 level and a Masters in Osteopathy.
Our days are filled with reading and workbooks mainly, and as we travel around, map reading and museums.
The kids called the book club – The Bespectacled Bookworm Book Club. The first book we read was the diary of Anne Frank. We decided to read this on our first major excursion in the Motorhome across northern Europe, to help to tie in our reading with the context of our environment. We have literally just finished this book, and the kids have each written a book report. Our next book to read is when Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr.
As full-time travellers, we still put a lot of emphasis on the kids education. It is quite structured, the kids do maths every day, times table rockstars most days and English literature and language every day. Outside of reading, most of the learning is done in an hour and a half to two hours – then we normally read for another hour later in the day.
After we have read, we often do some question and answers and write about some aspects that interested us.
It doesn’t sound much, but normally the concepts are really easily grasped within the first 10 minutes. When the kids aren’t distracted in a classroom, they can do things a lot quicker.
Currently in mathematics, A(12) is learning GCSE maths levels 3 to 6. We are doing gradients of straight line graphs and rearranging algebraic equations. We have a lot of CGP books essentially geared towards GCSE maths / English which we essentially just work through. Fairly straightforward. It does however mean that as the support officer I have to know a bit about these things as well, so I am often learning too.
H (9) has many support books. At the moment in English language she is working through some interesting concepts. A lot of which go over my head. But luckily L is there to support – English is not my strong suit.
Main Points:
- We often use a lot of GCSE support resources for all subjects.
- Most of our learning can be done in three hours.
- The kids are doing a lot of history and geography with travelling so we don’t specifically go over those topics.
- Reading literature together is very engaging and fun for all.
- We plan to do maths GCSE early for A who is 12.
- We use lots of different resources from YouTube, chat GPT, BBC Bitesize, Corbett Maths, Oxford Owl and books.
- We often like to learn outside.
- We are quite structured as we want the kids to have all the qualifications. This means they will be taking their GCSEs to go to A levels.
